This workshop is designed to help artists enhance their skills in painting portraits. All skill levels, from beginning to advanced, are welcomed. While painting from the live model, artists will employ various techniques for developing accurate proportions, and the proper placement of the model on the canvas. Participants will receive instruction on starting the portrait with a solid structural drawing done in monochromatic lines and tones on a stained canvas, and finishing the portrait in stages from darks, to middle tones, to lights. Instruction will be based on demonstrations, discussions, and individual critiques. Participants will work each day from a model in the morning, and a different model in the afternoon. The same morning and afternoon portrait will be worked on each day, for the duration of the workshop.

Paint your way through a full introduction to this exciting medium that truly serves as a cross between oil and watercolor. Not like the tube acrylics that don’t really capture the joy of either medium, but a wonderful dance between thin and thick, transparent and opaque, subtle and brilliant. Whether you paint in other media, or have never picked up a brush, you will enjoy this wild and loose workshop with a distinctly contemporary approach. Supply list online.

In the morning we will begin with Sergio discussing the aesthetic issues and techniques of art as he demonstrates and completes a field study, encouraging the fellow artists to observe. “Sometimes you learn more by observing and memorizing than actually painting. While I strongly encourage the students to observe my demonstration, they will have to option to paint alongside of me.” After the demonstration students will receive individual personal instruction and encouragement while completing their painting “Alla Prima” (in one sitting). The objective of this three day course is to sensitize the class to the aspects of outdoor painting, including:
* Learning how to see nature’s details
* Understanding the interplay of light and shadow
* Knowing how to mix the right colors
* Eliminating the fear of outdoor painting
